From our family to yours, Special Needs Special People wishes you a very Happy Thanksgiving! Today, let us reflect on all that we should be grateful for as a special needs community. Here is a list of what we should be thankful for:
Family: Family is always there for us no matter what. They always share our happiest moments and encourage us in our hardest. Whether it is advocating for their child in IEP meetings or always loving him or her, they enable children with special needs to reach their fullest potential.
Friends: Friends hold a very special place in our heart. They see us as more than just special needs and give us unconditional love. From always giving us a helping hand, to believing in us, to standing up for us, they fill our lives and our hearts with happiness.
Special Ed Teachers: Special Ed teachers go above and beyond to teach us, show us patience, help us reach our dreams and always believe in us. Without their endless love and support, we don’t know what we would do. These people are true superheroes!
Teaching Assistants and CNAs: TAs and CNAs build a strong one-on-one relationship with their students and patients. Whether it is helping us perform everyday tasks or always lending an ear to listen, they have a profound impact on us.
Doctors: Doctors are one of the most caring and supportive people in our lives. They are with us from Day 1 and do everything in their ability to improve our quality of living. People with special needs share a special relationship with their doctors as they work together. Doctors make a profound difference in our lives.
Therapists: Therapists enhance our lives and help us navigate hurdles. Because of them, we learn valuable everyday PT, OT and Speech skills. Therapists build a very intimate relationship with their patients and are special people.
Walkers/wheelchairs/walking stick/ramps: These inventions are true life-saviors for people with special needs, and makes countless opportunities more accessible to us. They make what seems impossible possible.
Organizations to help people with special needs: Organizations such as Special Olympics, Best Buddies and the Arc help to raise awareness and empower people with special needs. From organizing accessible sporting events to nurturing friendship, they inspire a more inclusive future.
Role Models: Role models such as FDR, Helen Keller and Stephen Hawkings break the sad misconception of disability equaling inability. In addition, they provide hope to people with special needs and show that their challenges can be used as an asset to help others.
YOU: Be thankful for yourself! There is only one of you in this world and every one of you makes an effect on the people around you. We love you all so much!
We are so thankful for all your support. Without you, Special Needs Special People would not be possible. You help us raise awareness in countless ways and always inspire us. This past one year has been very special for us, and we are so excited to start our second year of leading this platform. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
